How to Start a Photo Travel Blog

So you have taken your fancy Canon, Sony or Olympus digital camera on holidays and think your photos are good enough for the world? Well, you need to start up your own travel blog in order to start sharing your great travel pictures. This does not have to be a lot of hard work or even any money and there are many people who have already caught the travel photography bug.

Where do you start with your travel photo blog? Firstly, you need to check out other travel bloggers and see what they do. You might even find a site that accepts travel photos or you might want to start your own blog. Either way there are plenty of options for sharing your photography online and a modern digital camera makes it easy.

Getting the Right Travel Photos

First of all, you need to take the right photos when you are travelling. These may be simple snapshots of where you are travelling, landscape photos or even photos of the people you meet. The ideas and opportunities are endless and if you intend on writing about where you have travelled, great pictures will draw in the readers.

Words to Improve Your Pictures

A picture blog does not just have to be about great travel photography. You should be adding some descriptions to your photos and a few travel stories are a great idea too. The more content you have the better your photos will look on your blog.

Having writing and other content around your photos will also help people find it on the search engines. You might even start turning up on Google image searches if you have good descriptions of your photos. It can also help people understand where the photos are taken or who is in them.

Finding a Free Blog

It is easy to find free blogging sites to host your wonderful travel photos on. The most popular are blogger.com and wordpress.com which provide you with a free sub-name of their website. The sites are very simple to use and if you can use a word processor then you should be able to create a blog easily.

While photos take up some space on a website, you will usually have plenty of room for storage. However, there are also online storage sites as well as specific photo sites that you can store them on. Flikr is one of these sites and allows you to create a photo blog with your own profile. However, it does have the drawback of not being able to add as much as you could on your own blog such as writing.

Buying a Domain

The next thing to do after you build up a nice little following for your travel pictures is to buy your own domain name. You can call your website anything you want (usually ending in dot com or similar) as long as no-one else as registered it. You can also check if your own name is available if you want to operate as a photographer (either for art or professionally) in the future.
